Thai Massage

Thai massage is a traditional massage practice that combines massage, assisted stretching, and energy work. Sometimes called yoga massage, traditional Thai massage brings a unique experience that involves the physical and spiritual side of healing.

Thai massage originated in ancient Thailand as a blend of Indian Ayurveda combined

with traditional Chinese medicinal practices and Buddhist teachings. It developed within a culture whose civilizations stressed mindfulness, meditation, and yoga. Its underlying principles are balance, connection, and harmony.

Techniques

The techniques used in Thai massage include:

  • Massage – Various massage techniques are employed including compressions, rocking motions, stretching, and range of motion manipulation. The masseuse uses hands, elbows, knees and feet to apply pressure on the body.
  • Assisted stretching – The therapist assists the client in stretching, with the client holding their own body weight during the stretch. The massage helps loosen muscles before, during and after the stretch.
  • Passive yoga poses – The client is guided through yoga postures while
  • the therapist uses deep massage and passive stretching to help get the client into the pose. This helps increase flexibility, balance and range of motion.
  • Energy work – The therapist uses gentle acupressure along energy lines (sen lines) to stimulate chi, or life energy. This awakens the body’s healing energies and boosts physical and spiritual well-being.

The entire Thai massage experience aims to comprehensively treat the whole person – body, mind and spirit –

with a focus on aligning the body’s energy flows. The therapist uses empathy, intuition and healing intention to guide the session. Most Thai massages last 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

  • Aligns the body – The energy work performed along sen lines aims to
  • balance and harmonize the body’s energy system for optimal health and well-being.
  • Provides spiritual connection – The combination of meditation,
  • yoga and massage allows the practitioner to connect with their mind,
